Mouthguards are devices that are designed to protect the teeth, gums, and jaw from injury during sports or other physical activities. They can help prevent tooth fractures, jaw fractures, and soft tissue injuries.
• There are different types of mouthguards available, including
- Stock mouthguards
These are pre-formed and come in a variety of sizes. They are the most affordable option but may not fit as well as custom mouthguards.
- Boil-and-bite mouthguards
These are made from thermoplastic material that softens in hot water. You can then bite down on them to create a custom fit.
- Custom-fitted mouthguards
These are made by a dentist who takes an impression of your teeth to create a mouthguard that fits your mouth perfectly. They provide the best protection and comfort, but they are also the most expensive option.
• It is essential to wear a mouthguard during any activity that involves physicalcontact, such as football, basketball, and martial arts. It is also recommended for activities that involve the risk of falls, such as skateboarding androllerblading.
• If you are unsure which type of mouthguard is best for you, it is best to consult with your dentist or healthcare professional. They can help you determine the best mouthguard based on your individual needs and the type of activity you will be engaging in.
Custom Made Mouthguards
A mouthguard is used to protect the teeth and jaws from traumatic injury during sports.
There are 2 different types of mouthguards available:
- Custom fit dental mouthguard
These mouthguards are constructed directly from a mould taken from your teeth by one of our dentists and sent to a specialised lab. These mouthguards fit tightly over your teeth and are the most effective in preventing injuries to your teeth and jaw.
- The “do it yourself” mouthguard
These mouthguards are available from pharmacies and are usually poor fitting. They often are dislodged upon impact and offer little protection. Dentists do not recommend these type of mouthguards.
