Meet Dr Tom

Dentistry runs in the family for Dr Tom Hall. He is a fourth-generation dentist — his great grandfather, grandfather and father all studied dentistry at the University of Sydney, and his grandfather went on to serve as a maxillofacial surgeon in Europe during the Second World War. Growing up good with his hands and drawn to problem solving, dentistry was a natural fit for Tom too.

Tom completed his Bachelor of Medical Science at the University of Sydney in 2005, followed by his Bachelor of Dentistry in 2010. He began his career as an associate dentist at Albert St Dental in Taree, before becoming a practice owner and clinician at Gordon Dental in Sydney from 2012. In 2016, Tom and his close friend and fellow Sydney University dentistry graduate, Dr Nick Wilding, took over Terrigal Beach Dental + Implant Centre, where Tom has practised and co-owned the business ever since — 16 years in practice in total.

Tom has a special interest in dental implants, crowns, bridges, veneers and complex composite restorations, alongside all aspects of general dentistry. Over his career he has placed around 400 dental implants, and every implant case is backed by comprehensive treatment planning, including CBCT 3D scans, diagnostic impressions and guided surgical planning for accurate positioning and alignment. He holds a CBCT radiation licence and has completed regular continuing education since 2010, including advanced training in bone and soft tissue grafting and implant placement.

Tom’s approach to patient care is guided entirely by what the patient wants — he carries out only the treatment a patient asks for, and never uses hard-sell tactics for complex or expensive work. His aim is for every patient to leave feeling well looked after, and never pressured into treatment.

Tom lives at Avoca Beach with his wife Gemma and their three children, Eliane, Finn and Ruben. Outside the practice, he loves spearfishing, surfing, boating and camping with the family.

Community Involvement

Tom visits local childcare centres to run oral health education sessions for young children. He also sponsored and helped run the fairy floss stand at the Avoca Beach Public School fair — a dentist manning the fairy floss stand being a deliberate joke not lost on the family. Tom lives locally at Avoca Beach and has practised at Terrigal Beach Dental since 2016.

Patient FAQs

Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?
Suitability depends on factors such as bone health, overall oral health and your individual circumstances. Tom’s treatment planning includes a CBCT 3D scan and diagnostic impressions, so he can properly assess your suitability and talk you through your options.
This varies from patient to patient depending on the complexity of the case, whether bone grafting is required, and healing time. Tom will give you a clear idea of the expected timeline for your specific treatment plan at your consultation.
Costs vary depending on the complexity of your case and the number of implants required. Many health funds offer some level of cover for implant treatment under extras policies — the team can help you understand your options and provide a personalised quote.
Implant procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout. Some patients experience mild soreness during healing, which is generally manageable with standard pain relief.
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental implants are designed to be a long term solution. Tom can discuss how implants compare with bridges and dentures for your specific situation during your consultation.
